Hi, I would like to get some more information:
As I understand it, you were installing MSM 2.0. MSM 2.0 will will do an automatic uninstall of MSM 1.x before actually installing MSM 2. It seems that the error happened during the "uninstall 1.x" process.
1) I'd very much like to know the exact error message you saw. A screen shot of the dialog box would be even better.
I've not seen this problem in over 5 months of alpha and beta tests - so I'd really like to find out what happened for you.
I'd also like to know: 2) is win 7 32 or 64 bit? 3) are you running with admin privileges when running the MSM installer? 4) what version of MSM was installed prior? 1.?.?
please also try this: 5) (from a user account that has full admin privileges) go to the mach3 entry in the start menu, you will find that there is an entry for MachStdMill; uninstall - please try to do a manual uninstall of the current MSM version - does it succeed? give the same error or a different error?
you can also try an uninstall via control panel, add remove programs.
Once I know the exact error, I can try to narrow the possibilities some more.

OK, I had a chance to look for that error message in the code -
Something happened to cause an error when the system attempted to uninstall the old MSM version .The most likely cause of the error is a lack of permission when running the MSM 2.0 installer.
Before suggesting other more complicated actions we could take, I'll wait for the answers to the questions in my previous post.

Dave, Thanks for the quick response.
You can not uninstall your stuff from a clean new release of Mach3.
I installed MSM 1... on my new mach ...62 then ran the 2.0 update, ran fine.
I would say all your alpha's are long time customers so this did not come up.
Keep up the good work.

Hi, You can not uninstall your stuff from a clean new release of Mach3. I'm a tad confused re what you mean by a "clean new release of mach3". A fresh system will start with neither mach nor MSM, so installing mach and then MSM 2.0 works fine (I've done that lots of times). but that would not create the situation you had as MSM2.0 would not try to uninstall MSM 1.x as it would have never been there. I installed MSM 1... on my new mach ...62 then ran the 2.0 update, ran fine. I would say all your alpha's are long time customers so this did not come up. I'll go double check - is this what you are saying does not work: a) clean system, no MSM, no Mach b) install mach 3.43.62 c) install MSM 2.0 - this is the step that fails? Keep up the good work. Jack I'll try! Dave

Dave,
I may have cheated.
I had mach3 ...22 and msm 1... installed.
I renamed c:\mach3 to c:\mach3x.
I installed mach3 ...62(in new c:\mach3), install of msm 2.0 fails, see above.
I install msm 1..., then msm 2... , install works.
Thanks Jack

Hi, Yep - that won't work with MSM. FYI - Here is what happened: I had mach3 ...22 and msm 1... installed. OK, this gave us a starting point where Mach and MSM were both installed and working. "installed" for MSM means not only that files are present in the right places, but also that the program is registered with windows etc. I renamed c:\mach3 to c:\mach3x. This step is what caused the problem. MSM is installed like most windows programs and removing the mach directory is not the equivalent of uninstalling MSM. What happened is that removing the contents of the mach dir also removed many of the MSM files. In particular, the MSM uninstall info for MSM 1.x was in the mach dir - and it was moved when you renamed the dir. I installed mach3 ...62(in new c:\mach3), install of msm 2.0 fails, see above. Now knowing what happened, I would have expected this. THe logic in the MSM installer says: IS MSM already installed? If so, check the installed MSM version and decide if it needs to be uninstalled as a first step.... MSM was installed (as it's info was in the registry etc), so the MSM 2.0 installer tried to uninstall MSM 1.x - but failed as the 1.x uninstall info had been deleted when you renamed the mach dir. The MSM 1.x installer has the same logic in it - but now when installing itself, it said, yes MSM is already installed, but it's a version that does not require a uninstall as a first step - so it just ran the 1.x install. The 1.x install replaced the missing 1.x uninstall info as part of the process. ..., then msm 2... , install works. Yep, as this time the MSM 2 installer ran, found MSM 1, but the MSM 1 uninstall info had been fixed by the prior MSM 1 install - so it changed MSM 1 to MSM 2. If MSM 1 had been properly uninstalled, MSM 2 would also have been fine. Moral of the story is that it would be good to resist deleting files in the mach dir by hand. Dave
