Dave... I have been using MSM for a while and really like it. Also noted that the pricing is very reasonable. However, upon reading the revised manual, I was extremely dismayed to note that it requires a network connection both to activate and to phone home. I do not have my machine connected to a network and have not even loaded the network functions to enable networking. I purposely did not want any outside connection to my machine. Also the manual talks about subscriptions expiring. Does this mean one has to buy a subscription every year? I understand tying the MSM install to a specific machine to protect your IP. I had expected the usual installation with an activation code and then an added fee for any major changes or updates. This online requirement may cause me to rethink implementing MSM on my machine. Hi Larry, You’ve raised several questions. Permit me to break them out into multiple topics to better address them. I’ll start by saying thank you for writing that “I have been using MSM for a while and really like it. Also noted that the pricing is very reasonable.” I like comments like that I’m truly sorry that you find the use of online access to be a problem for you. I’ll try to offer some additional background as to why MSM uses online activation. I’ll expand further on this in another post I’m working. In the mean time, please consider that that product price points are a function of multiple interacting factors. One key factor is license transaction costs. The use of 24/7 e-commerce with online license activation is required to enable the MSM price points which you found reasonable. The second area you asked about is the value of a subscription vs. an expectation which you expressed as “I had expected the usual installation with an activation code and then an added fee for any major changes or updates. ” The "added fee for any major changes" is not a desired part of the CVI software license model. I’ll cover that in a second post I’m also working on. The topics you’ve raised will take me a little time to get written up – but be assured that I will get the info posted (in fact, with probably more details in the posts than you expected. Don’t take that personally, I’m going to use your inquiry as an excuse to also provide info for the benefit of other readers). Dave
