I have been using MSM for a few months now, and like it a lot. I only just yesterday read the installation instructions, and found that I was supposed to clone either the MachStdMill.xml and modify it with my settings, or clone my existing XML and rename it somehow for use with MSM.
Until now, I had just installed MSM, and then run my exiting XML, and loaded the MSM screens.
Is there any reason I can;t use my existing XML and just make sure the MSM screens are loaded?

Hi, I have been using MSM for a few months now, and like it a lot. Well yes, or no - depends on your viewpoint.... I'll elaborate... Clearly what you did works from most viewpoints (after all you have been running MSM for months). The readme file recommends a different install process for a couple of reasons. The first reason is the software equivalent of "first do no harm"... The install instructions in the readme file are set up so that when you install MSM, you end up running MSM from a profile that is separate from any prior mach profile. That way MSM can only impact the active profile and not change a "pre-MSM" or "non-MSM" profile. The idea is that if something did ever go wrong, the user would still have the unaltered profile (from before MSM) to fall back to. What you did was to essentially "convert" your prior profile to MSM. That's not a bad thing - it just means the you don't have the non-MSM profile should you ever want to go back to it. The second reason is that MSM alters some profile macros (M6 etc) when it starts in order to make sure it's using the scripts it needs (necessary to accomplish MSM features like auto switching pages for tool changes). This means that MSM updates the active profile macros to MSM versions. With a separate MSM profile, the old 1024 macros are left alone. No big deal, you can always get the "stock macros" from another profile (say the stock 1024 one). For more info on this see sections 12.3 and 9.3.1.1.3 of the MSM user manual. Dave

Hi, The instructions for setting up a profile for use with MSM are in the MSM README File. There are two ways to find the README file: 1) The readme file is installed to mach3\documentation\MachStdMill directory when MSM is installed. 2) Many people need to see the file and read it before installing MSM, so it is also available separately from the MSM download page at calypsoventures.com/downloads/machstdmillrc1.htmlPlease take a look at the README file and if you have any questions, please ask.
